Copper Mesh Cleaner Recipe

copper mesh, during and after cleaning

2 cups water (~500 ml)
1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide (~50 ml)
1.5 oz citric acid powder (~50 ml)

Soak the copper mesh completely submerged in the solution for about nine minutes.

CAUTION: The byproduct is Copper Sulfate, one of the most toxic substances known to man. Handle appropriately.

If this recipe helped your production run smother and safer (less toxic), would you buy me a beer? Thanks! 🍻 Cheers!

Jump-Start Your New Diet With Protein

Porterhouse Steak

Diet researchers in Poland recently studied which diet was better to start a weight loss program with, a High-Protein or Low Glycemic Index Diet.

Conclusions: A short-term HP diet applied as a jump-start diet appeared to be more beneficial than an LGI diet, as indicated by the greater fat mass loss, preservation of muscle mass, and better effects on the lipid profile.

High Protein Foods

Perhaps it’s time to rethink a Carnivore Diet, if only for a delicious jump-start.

“Thank you, I’ll have the porterhouse, please.”

These 3 ingredients worked for me…

• a Vegan diet

No Bananas on a Boat

Science or superstition?

Boaters are among the most superstitious people on the planet because there are so many hazards at sea.

You may have heard the saying, “No bananas on a boat,” but do you know where the rule originated?

Instead of superstition, you may be surprised to learn there is a scientific reason to keep bananas off of a boat, especially if you’re storing any other fresh produce.

Bananas give off ethylene, a gas naturally produced by plants to trigger leaves to turn yellow and fall off during certain seasons like winter.

Bananas give off more ethylene than your average fruit, so much in fact that storing bananas with other produce will cause other fruits and vegetables to ripen prematurely and spoil.

Today, cruise ships store bananas in separate food lockers, equipped with systems than vent the ethylene gas safety away from other stored foods.

Ancient mariners learned this lesson the hard way and passed down the rule, “No bananas on a boat”.

Boaters may not known the science, but in this case, the superstition may save their meal.

Eat Less, Become Smarter

Hara hachi bu.

Researchers studying Anorexia Nervosa (AN) made some startling discoveries when they compared the cognitive tests of healthy people and those with AN.

AN patients showed faster reaction times in the attention tasks, as well as increased accuracy in grammatical reasoning compared to the healthy volunteers.

The science is clear. Want optimal brain function? Limit food intake. But, how?

The Japanese have a hack for eating less. Hara hachi bu. “Eat until you’re 80% full.”

Mindful eating. Smart.

Is Metabolic Syndrome a Vitamin D Deficiency?

The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D has risen in developed countries over the past few years in association with lifestyle changes and an increase in unhealthy habits.

Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in various diseases, including metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is clinically defined by a set of metabolic and vascular disorders.

Vitamin D Synthesis Pathways

While they were not able to conclude that vitamin D deficiency causes MetS, a group of Spanish researchers report that vitamin D supplements are effective in treating metabolic syndrome (MetS).

via Nutrients 202113(3), 830; https://doi.org/10.3390/nu13030830

It’s interesting to me how often dietary deficiency is the root cause of disease.

Whenever an ailment is new to our time, I blame the Standard American Diet. SAD indeed.

Vegan Diet Health Benefits and Risks

Plant-based diets (PBDs) are increasingly consumed around the world. In particular, among PBDs, the vegan diet is a food pattern characterized by the exclusion of all animal-origin foods.

What drives people to adopt this model are mainly ethical, health and environmental reasons.

A vegan diet, if well-balanced and varied, can help in achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health.

However, this nutritional approach, if not well-balanced, can cause deficiencies in proteins, ω-3 fatty acids, iron, vitamin D and calcium, zinc, iodine and, above all, vitamin B12.

Oral food supplements especially fortified foods are recommended in these cases to restore the nutritional deficiencies.

A vegan diet generally reduces the risk of developing chronic non-communicable degenerative diseases, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) and, in addition, requires fewer natural resources for food production than an omnivorous diet.

via Nutrients 202113(3), 817; https://doi.org/10.3390/nu13030817

I might give a vegan diet another try, now that I know which potential dietary deficiencies to be mindful of.
